Resident Evil is ready to infect movie theaters once again. On September 18, 2026 internationally, Capcom's legendary horror franchise returns to the big screen with a brand-new adaptation directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons.
This time, the ambition is clear: bring Resident Evil back to its horror roots and recreate the feeling of survival that made the video games so iconic.
🧟 Resident Evil gets another chance on the big screen
Turning Resident Evil into a movie has never been easy. Since the first Milla Jovovich film in 2002, the franchise has gone through several different adaptations with very mixed results.
After the original six-film saga, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City attempted a fresh start in 2021 with an approach closer to the games. Netflix also launched a live-action series in 2022, which was cancelled after one season.
In 2026, Resident Evil is starting over once again — but having Zach Cregger behind the camera could make all the difference.
🎬 From the director of Barbarian and Weapons
With Barbarian and Weapons, Zach Cregger quickly established himself as one of the most exciting voices in modern horror.
His Resident Evil won't simply recreate the story of an existing game. Instead, the movie tells a new story within the Resident Evil universe, while embracing the elements that define the franchise: survival, limited resources, terrifying creatures and constant danger.
It could finally strike the right balance between cinematic reinvention and the DNA of the games.
🚑 Bryan's nightmare begins
The story follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams.
Bryan is a medical courier who finds himself trapped in a rapidly escalating nightmare while making a delivery. What should have been a routine job becomes a desperate race for survival as everything around him collapses into chaos.
The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry and Kali Reis.
Instead of immediately putting Leon, Claire, Jill or Chris at the center of the story, the film lets audiences experience this nightmare through a new character.
🎮 Bringing survival horror back to Resident Evil
This may be the most exciting part for longtime fans: Cregger wants the movie to capture the mechanics and tension of survival horror.
Resource management is expected to play a significant role. Limited ammunition, the protagonist's health and the consequences of wasting precious resources can all become part of the suspense.
Rather than turning Resident Evil into another massive zombie action movie, the goal appears to be making audiences feel just as vulnerable as players do in the games.
🔥 Expectations are already high
With release day approaching, anticipation surrounding the movie is growing. Early box-office tracking reported by several outlets is encouraging, although the real test will obviously come once audiences actually see it.
Resident Evil nevertheless has one huge advantage: nearly three decades after the original game debuted, it remains one of the most recognizable survival-horror franchises in the world.
And French fans will have a very special opportunity to experience its return.
