With only a few hours to go before one of the most anticipated gaming events of the year, all eyes are on Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto VI.
This Thursday, August 27, Rockstar will broadcast Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a special presentation dedicated to the next installment in its flagship franchise. What makes the event even more unusual is that it will premiere first on Netflix, before becoming publicly available a few hours later.
But the presentation comes at a particularly turbulent time. Over the past few days, unauthorized gameplay videos have been circulating online, prompting Rockstar to break its silence and Take-Two to take steps to identify those responsible.
Between the Netflix event, the leaks, the return to Vice City, Jason and Lucia, the release date, pre-orders and all the questions surrounding the future of GTA, here's everything you need to know before tomorrow's big reveal.
GTA 6 on Netflix: what time does the event start?
Rockstar Games has officially announced that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will be broadcast on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The first broadcast will take place on Netflix at 3 PM New York time, which means 9 PM in France.
Netflix will have a six-hour exclusivity window. Players without a subscription will then be able to watch the same presentation for free on Rockstar Games' official YouTube channel and on the GTA VI website at 9 PM ET, or 3 AM in France during the night of August 27 to 28.
Choosing Netflix for a video game presentation is particularly unusual. Rockstar could simply have released another trailer on YouTube. Instead, the studio is turning this new stage of GTA VI's marketing campaign into a global entertainment event.
What will GTA VI: An Extended Look actually show?
That is the big question.
Rockstar has confirmed the date, the platforms and the name of the presentation, but the studio has not officially revealed exactly what will be shown.
It is therefore important to remain cautious about the many rumors currently circulating online. The exact runtime of the presentation has not been officially confirmed either.
However, the title \"An Extended Look\" suggests Rockstar intends to go much further than the two trailers released so far. The community is hoping to finally see real gameplay, the game's user interface, open-world exploration, driving, combat, NPC interactions and perhaps even how switching between Jason and Lucia will work.
After years of Rockstar carefully controlling every official image of the game, this presentation could mark the true beginning of GTA VI's final marketing phase ahead of release.
The presentation comes after a new wave of leaks
The timing is particularly difficult for Rockstar.
Just days before the event, several videos allegedly taken from a recent playable build of GTA VI began circulating online.
The footage reportedly shows Jason Duval, one of the game's two main protagonists, in several gameplay situations. Some of the videos were quickly removed following copyright claims.
We will deliberately avoid describing the contents of those videos in detail in order to avoid spoilers.
The leaks have notably been associated with the name CyberLeek, used by the person or group claiming responsibility for their release. Cryptocurrency-related elements were also linked to some of the posts, making the situation even stranger.
Take-Two is trying to identify the source of the leaks
The situation now goes far beyond simply removing videos from social media.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company, has taken steps to obtain information that could help identify the people responsible for distributing the material.
Microsoft and Discord have reportedly been involved in legal requests related to the investigation into accounts that may have been used to distribute the files.
For Rockstar, the situation inevitably recalls the massive 2022 leak, when dozens of videos from a very early development version of GTA VI were published online.
Even GTA VI's first official trailer was leaked several hours before its planned premiere in December 2023, forcing Rockstar to release it early.
GTA VI has therefore developed a somewhat paradoxical relationship with secrecy. Rockstar communicates very little, yet interest in the project is so enormous that even the smallest piece of information can immediately go viral.
Rockstar responds: the leaks were \"heartbreaking\" for the team
Following the scale of the situation, Rockstar Games eventually published a message addressed directly to its community.
The studio explained that seeing GTA VI footage revealed in this way had been particularly difficult for the development team and reiterated that this was obviously not how the developers wanted players to discover their work after so many years.
Rockstar also thanked players for the many messages of support the team has received over the past few days.
One part of the statement is particularly important: Rockstar says it is nearly finished with the game and continues to communicate around a planned release on November 19, 2026.
At this stage, nothing in Rockstar's official communication suggests that the recent leaks will result in another delay.
Jason and Lucia are at the heart of GTA 6
GTA VI will primarily tell the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
Rockstar describes Jason as someone who grew up around criminals and con artists. After spending time in the military, he eventually ends up working for local drug runners in the Keys.
Lucia, meanwhile, has spent time in prison after fighting for her family. After leaving the Leonida Penitentiary, she appears determined to take control of her life and achieve the kind of success she has never experienced before.
When what was supposed to be a relatively simple job goes wrong, the two characters find themselves caught in a wider criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.
The relationship between Jason and Lucia therefore appears to be a central part of the story, with a dynamic that in some ways evokes famous criminal couples from American culture.
Vice City is back, but GTA 6 will go far beyond one city
The return of Vice City is obviously one of GTA VI's most symbolic features.
More than twenty years after GTA: Vice City, Rockstar is returning to its fictional take on Miami, but with ambitions on a completely different scale.
This time, Vice City is only one part of a much larger region: Leonida, Rockstar's fictional version of Florida.
Rockstar has already revealed several very different environments, ranging from the neon-lit streets of Vice City to the Keys, as well as rural areas, swamps, small towns and large natural environments.
The objective appears to be less about simply creating the biggest possible map and more about building an extremely dense and believable world.
After the extraordinary level of detail seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, expectations surrounding NPC behavior, wildlife, physics, weather, accessible interiors and dynamic events are understandably enormous.
An entire ecosystem of characters
Jason and Lucia will not be alone.
Rockstar has already introduced several characters who are expected to play important roles in the world of GTA VI.
Cal Hampton, Jason's friend, spends much of his time at home monitoring communications and developing different theories about what is happening around him.
Boobie Ike is presented as a major local figure in Vice City who has turned his street background into an empire involving real estate, a nightclub and a recording studio.
Dre'Quan Priest is trying to establish himself in the music industry, while Raul Bautista is an experienced bank robber constantly looking for new partners willing to take risks.
There is also Brian Heder, an old-school drug runner in the Keys for whom Jason carries out different jobs.
Music, social media, influencers, nightlife, crime and the local economy therefore appear to form different layers of the same interconnected ecosystem.
Social media appears to play a major role
One element has been present ever since the very first trailer: social media.
Rockstar appears determined to push its satire of modern America even further by directly incorporating vertical videos, influencers, viral trends and the constant search for online attention into the game's world.
The trailers frequently show sequences that strongly resemble TikTok, Instagram Live and other modern social platforms.
The big question is whether this will simply be used as a storytelling tool and world-building element or whether social media will become a genuine gameplay mechanic.
GTA 6 pre-orders are already open
Pre-orders for GTA VI officially opened in June.
Rockstar is offering a standard edition as well as an Ultimate Edition featuring additional vehicles, weapons, clothing and other content connected to Jason and Lucia's story.
Players who purchase or pre-order GTA VI before November 20 will also receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, a collection of bonuses inspired by Vice City's neon-soaked golden age.
Digital pre-orders will be available for pre-load from November 12.
A physical box, but with a download code
Rockstar has also confirmed a decision that is likely to continue generating debate.
The physical version of GTA VI will be available from November 12, allowing players to begin pre-loading the game before its official launch.
However, the box will contain a download code.
The decision once again raises the wider debate surrounding the gradual disappearance of traditional physical games and the long-term preservation of video games.
When the game in question is something as significant as GTA VI, the issue goes far beyond a simple preference between discs and digital downloads.
GTA 6 is currently being presented as a single-player experience
Another important detail in Rockstar's current communication concerns multiplayer.
The studio is officially presenting GTA VI as a single-player experience.
Rockstar has not yet revealed in detail what will eventually succeed GTA Online.
It is difficult to imagine the company abandoning an ecosystem that has supported GTA V for more than a decade, but there is currently no detailed announcement explaining how a future version of GTA Online will be integrated with GTA VI, or when it could launch.
This is probably one of the biggest announcements Rockstar is still keeping in reserve.
What about the PC version?
GTA VI is currently announced only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
No PC version has been officially announced.
Rockstar's recent history obviously makes a later PC release highly plausible. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on PC after their console releases.
However, without an official announcement, no reliable release date can currently be given.
The big performance question
Tomorrow's presentation will also be closely watched by players interested in the technical side of the game.
The trailers have shown an impressive level of density: traffic, crowds, vegetation, lighting, reflections, packed beaches and incredibly detailed environments.
But Rockstar has not yet explained the different graphics modes that will be available or officially confirmed specific frame-rate targets for each console.
The possibility of a 60 FPS mode will therefore be one of the most closely watched technical questions, particularly on the most powerful hardware.
What we really want to see tomorrow
Beyond the graphics, players now want to understand how GTA VI actually plays.
Police behavior, the wanted system, driving, vehicle damage, weapons, NPC artificial intelligence, interactions with businesses, side activities, customization, robberies and switching between Jason and Lucia are among the biggest unanswered questions.
The community is also eager to discover just how far Rockstar has pushed its simulation of everyday life.
GTA V had already made a huge impact when it launched in 2013. Red Dead Redemption 2 then raised the bar dramatically in terms of detail and immersion in 2018.
Thirteen years after GTA V, GTA VI will therefore need to offer much more than simply better graphics.
GTA 6 is already much more than just a game
Very few games can generate this level of attention months before they are even released.
GTA VI generates millions of discussions across social media, influences the schedules of other publishers, triggers investigations linked to leaks and has now allowed Rockstar to organize a major presentation in partnership with Netflix.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise now extends far beyond the boundaries of video games.
The leaks have unquestionably disrupted a marketing campaign that Rockstar usually controls down to the smallest detail. But they have not reduced the extraordinary anticipation surrounding the game.
Tomorrow night, the studio will finally have the opportunity to take control of the conversation again and show GTA VI exactly the way its teams intended it to be seen.
